2016 Week 5 Preview: Storm vs Sharks

The Jacksonville Sharks and Tampa Bay Storm have had some interesting, tense, and crazy meetings over the years, so leave it to the two of them to provide a Sunday afternoon matchup in Week 5 of the 2016 Arena Football League season.

Ignoring the quirk that Jacksonville has lost five of the last six games at what is now known as Amelie Arena, and the other quirk that the teams are a combined 1-6, this has the potential for getting ugly, and fast. Tampa Bay hasn't cracked the 30-point barrier in their first three contests this year, and they've already given up 60 twice, giving them the worst point differential in the league (-32 ppg).

What to Watch For:

Normally I provide some key players on offense and defense who will be factors in the game, but for this one, it's fairly straightforward: who plays?

For Jacksonville, they've been wheeling and dealing all week, signing OL Ryan Cave, losing DB Keon Lyn to the NFL, and their latest move brings back arguably one of the more dangerous wide receivers in the league: Prechae Rodriguez. A four-year vet with more than 4500 yards and 108 TDs to his credit, his signing will not only add depth at an already talented position, but potentially a boost to the return game that nearly caused havoc last week against Arizona. Will he see the field to take attention from former Storm player Joe Hills, or Roger Jackson, or Tiger Jones?

For Tampa Bay, who will be under center? Three different players have suited up to play the pivot, and none of them have had any real success. Adam Kennedy started the first two games, and left to make way for Jonathan Bane. Before their last game, the Storm signed Jason Boltus, only for him to get beaten up and have Bane come back again. With two weeks to heal and re-learn the offense, will he come back and be effective, or will Tampa Bay be forced to make even more changes?

This is, on paper, an easy game for Jacksonville, and they've been capable to lay a smackdown (hence last year's 63-16 victory late in the season). But, also think back to the 63-56 loss that had a 56-42 halftime score. The Storm weren't supposed to be in either of those games, but they stole one. Also, remember 2013, where a 7-11 Tampa Bay team came to Jacksonville in the playoffs and held a lead before losing 69-62 to a Jacksonville team that had the second-best record in the league...

Again, this could get ugly, very quickly. However, given these two teams, this could also be one of the best games of the weekend. It all depends on who plays...

Predators Stay Perfect With Win in Cleveland

The Gladiators offense only ran five plays in the first quarter but that was enough to lead 21-20 after the first 15 minutes. They also hit a new high in scoring after hitting 50 last week in Philly and hitting 56 on Friday night. Dominick Goodman returned after missing last week and scored late in the second quarter. Collin Taylor scored three times. Taylor has now scored at least one touchdown in 21 straight games.

Arvell Nelson, a Cleveland native became the third QB to start for the Gladiators in just five games. This is Nelson's third AFL team after two different runs with the Spokane Shock and one season in Pittsburgh as a member of the Power. Nelson played well until the middle of the third, where he threw an interception into the endzone that was picked off by Paul Stephens. Cleveland was up 49-48 at that point, but only scored another touchdown from that point on resulting in a 56-76 loss to the unbeaten Predators.
Nelson went 25 of 37 for 332 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. It's the most touchdowns he has thrown in a game in his AFL career. Next most was last season's first round National Conference game against the Arizona Rattlers, which he lost.
Quentin Sims, another new face, provided a nice spark his first catch of the game went for 28 yards. Sims collected 68 yards and two touchdowns on just four catches.

Next week, Cleveland faces the Jacksonville Sharks, who are 1-3 at the moment but, with last week's OT loss to the unbeated and truly the best team in the league Arizona Rattlers,  Cleveland is well aware it will take a strong effort just to have a shot late in next week's game.

Prechae Rodriguez Returns to Sharks

On Friday, the Jacksonville Sharks announced the assignment of WR Prechae Rodriguez. As part of team policy, the terms of the contract were not released.

After starring at Auburn, Rodriguez (age 31, 6'4", 215 lbs) was not selected in the 2008 NFL Draft, but signed with the New York Jets as a free agent. However, he was later cut from the roster. He was a third round selection in the 2011 CFL Draft, and had brief stints with five teams in the Canadian Football League.

Rodriguez's travels led him to the Arena Football League in 2012. While he has played for four teams in his four-year career, he's made an impact on each one. In his rookie season with Tampa Bay, he caught 125 passes for 1653 yards and 32 scores. Heading across I-4 to Orlando, he did even better, catching 40 TDs on only 119 passes, but still netting 1578 receiving yards.

He didn't see as much action in 2014 in Pittsburgh, but he still kept the Power alive, registering 32 touchdown passes and 1138 yards on only 85 catches.

Coming to the Sharks in 2015, he added depth to arguably the most talented receiving corps in the league. While he caught 14 passes for 157 yards and four scores in relief, he can add an extra boost to the return game with his speed and maneuverability (yes, he only has three returns in his career, but given recent woes, expect him to see the field more in this capacity).

As a team with such receivers as Joe "Superman" Hills and Roger "Spiderman" Jackson, Prechae Rodriguez could make what is an already hard to slow down offense borderline unstoppable. But, as the question usually arises, how will the offense stay intact when there's only one ball to throw around? Time will tell, but expect to hear Rodriguez's name often as the season progresses.

2016 Week 5 Preview: Steel vs Rattlers

The last time the Portland Steel (0-3) and Arizona Rattlers (4-0) squared off, neither starting quarterback played in the fourth quarter. Through three quarters, Danny Southwick had four turnovers on the Portland side, while Nick Davila had five touchdowns for the Rattlers. The 80-28 Arizona win has held up as the largest margin of victory (52) so far this AFL season

Southwick is no longer with the team as a result of being released earlier this week. Davila has continued to show why he is the best quarterback in the game right now, leading the league’s top team. Portland visits Arizona at Talking Stick Resort Arena this Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Signing with the Steel this offseason to make his second career stop in Portland, Southwick was being relied upon to give the offense a boost. After three games of low productivity, he was released and Darron Thomas was brought back to be the franchise’s starting quarterback for a second time. He will make his 2016 debut against the Rattlers on Saturday.

While Portland has been toiling in quarterback mediocrity, Arizona has had no such misfortune. Davila leads the league in completion percentage (72%), and has thrown 25 touchdowns (second in the league) to only two interceptions. In Arizona’s game last week, a 75-68 overtime victory against the Jacksonville Sharks, Davila had 390 yards and eight touchdowns.

With a bye week last week, Portland has had two weeks to game plan for Arizona. However, making a significant change at quarterback at the start of this week instead of last week puts them at a disadvantage that they are not in position to afford.  The superiority of Arizona should ring true again in another blowout victory.

Keon Lyn Returns to NFL, Signs with Redskins

On Tuesday, the Jacksonville Sharks announced that defensive back Keon Lyn will sign with the Washington Redskins' practice squad, leading to his placement on the Other League Exempt List.

Lyn (age 27, 6'1", 205 lbs) has spent his entire two-year Arena Football League career in Jacksonville. This season, he has a total of four tackles (one solo and six assisted).

The Miami native started his football career at Miramar High School, leading his team to a state championship in his senior season in 2009, where he was named a Broward County All-Star. That year, he recorded 119 tackles and five interceptions.

In his four-year college career at Syracuse University, he recorded 75 solo tackles, six interceptions, and a forced fumble. He also scored a defensive touchdown in his junior and senior seasons.

After the 2014 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts signed Lyn, but he did not make the final 53-man roster. Since he was assigned to the Sharks in 2015, he also spent time with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League, as well as time with two more NFL teams, the New York Jets and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Following this week's latest transactions, the Jacksonville roster remains at the League maximum of 24 active players.

2016 Week 5 Preview: Gladiators vs Predators

The Orlando Predators (4-0) are on a mission to start the season with five victories for the fist time since going 6-0 in 2003.

Leading the way for the Predators is fourth year quarterback Randy Hippeard. Hippeard has completed 82-127 passes this season and ranks third in passing yards with 1,038. He also has thrown for 21 touchdowns, ranking fourth in the league.

Additionally, receiver Brandon Thompkins and running back Larry Brackins both have returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

The Cleveland Gladiators (1-3) will host Orlando at 7 p.m. Friday evening at Quicken Loans Arena.

All eyes will be on quarterback Arvell Nelson as he expected to make his first start for the Gladiators in this week 5 matchup.

Wider receiver Collin Taylor who scored a touchdown in his 20th consecutive game last week will hope to continue that success. Taylors eight touchdowns receptions this year are tied for fourth in the league.

The Orlando Predators are out to prove they are an elite team in the AFL this season and this road trip will be a good gauge to show if they can win in a hostile environment.

For the Cleveland Gladiators, they hope to grind out a win and get back in the hunt for playoff rankings.

Steel Sign QB Darron Thomas, Release Danny Southwick

Steel qurterback Danny Southwick entered the 2016 season with high hopes for the Portland Steel. The 34-year old, five-year veteran of the AFL brought with him a low completion percentage, but decent numbers in touchdowns, attempts/touchdown, and interception percentage.

These held true for last season, split with the Spokane Shock and LA Kiss, and his whole career. A career that had already included a short stint in Portland in which he’d lost his starting job. All of that sounds serviceable, but he had a total of 753 pass attempts entering this season.

That’s about a full season and a quarter for most starting quarterbacks in the league. In other words, for somebody of his age and time in the league, he was rather inexperienced. That inexperience showed itself in full force this season.

After three games this season, Southwick found himself among the league’s worst in completion percentage, touchdown percentage, and turnovers. In a league completely reliant on the quarterback’s ability to move the ball and put up points, Danny Southwick was not fulfilling that role. The Steel were forced to make a move, in a familiar direction.

In two seasons as the starting quarterback at the University of Oregon, Darron Thomas led the Ducks to a Rose Bowl championship in 2012, and an appearance in the 2011 National Championship game. He finished his college career completing 61% of his passes, with a total of 66 touchdowns to 17 interceptions, and adding another nine touchdowns rushing.

Thomas skipped his senior year to enter the 2012 NFL Draft. He went undrafted and unsigned. After bouncing around in a couple professional leagues, he signed on with the Portland Thunder for the 2014 season. After losing his starting job, to none other than Southwick, he saw limited playing time for the Thunder through the end of the 2015 season. He was not retained as this season began, but Southwick’s struggles drove Portland to seek out the quarterback they’ve been comfortable having around.

“We are excited to add Darron to our team,” said Steel headcoach Ron James. “Darron possesses a unique skill set at the quarterback position. He has played at a high level in college and is intent on becoming a consistent quarterback.” Thomas having a unique skill set is not off base. It is questionable, however, that the very player who could has proven to not produce for the last two years is being confidently relied on as an answer to the same problem now.

Cleveland Adds Insurance at QB

Over the weekend, the Wichita Force of the Champions Indoor Football League announced that their starting quarterback, Stephen Panasuk, signed with the Gladiators.

On the Force's website (www.wichitaforce.com), head coach Paco Martinez shared his throughts.

“When Panusuk signed he said his goals were to win a championship here in Wichita and/or get promoted to the AFL. He’s guided us to a solid start and is now getting called up. Stephen is an intelligent QB, Cleveland is getting a winner.”
In seven games this season, Panasuk led Wichita to a 5-2 record, completing 97 of 159 passes for 1,084 yards and 31 passing touchdowns in the process. He leaves the IFL ranked third in total offensive touchdowns for 2016, as he also ran for a score.

As he moves on to the big leagues, Panasuk commented:
“I love this organization, the coaching staff, this team, and the fans. Leaving is tough. It’s leaving a family. I’m grateful for being brought in by Coach Martinez. I wouldn’t be able to take this opportunity if it wasn’t for this organization.”
Making the jump from the lower indoor leagues to the AFL is nothing new, and regardless if he sees action or not for the rest of 2016, this will be a major opportunity and a learning experience for his career and moving forward. If the league does complete its expansion plans for 2017, Panasuk could be someone to call on for teams looking for a signal caller.

Sharks Sign Ryan Cave to Boost O-Line

On Monday, the Jacksonville Sharks announced that they solidified their offensive line with veteran offensive lineman Ryan Cave. Cave was assigned to the roster, and the terms of the deal were not discussed per team policy.

Cave (age 27, 6'5", 335 lbs), a native of Beaufort, South Carolina, is in his fifth season in the Arena Football League, his first as a shark after spending 2015 with the Orlando Predators. That season, he played in 16 regular-season games, seeing most of his action at center while catching two passes for 18 yards at tight end. His pass protection and run blocking helped Orlando finished third in the league (of 12 teams in 2015) in scoring offense at 56.8 points per game.

After making 38 appearances at Hampton University, Cave spent three seasons with the Spokane Shock, showing his versatility by playing all three positions along the front line. As a rookie in 2012, he played 14 games, and followed that with 15 starts in 2013 before a limited, seven-appearance 2014 season.

He has eight receptions for 74 yards and three touchdowns in his four-year career, which means he is a reliable backup/second option for Mo Ruffins on tight end screens. Plus, with experience all along the offensive line, he can come in on jumbo package plays at the goal line, and provide a big body to help on field goals and extra point attempts.

Storm Make Moves

The Tampa Bay Storm have made many different moves in the past few days. One of those moves is that they acquired wide receiver Xaiver Boyce. Boyce played his rookie season with the Philadelphia Soul in 2015. He caught 15 passes for 177 yards and six touchdowns.

They also have WR Mike Washington, who they acquired from the Arizona Rattlers in a trade last week.

Washington, the five-year AFL veteran, began his AFL career with the Pittsburgh Power in 2011. He spent three seasons in the steel city before joining the Spokane Shock in 2014. He caught 89 passes for 801 yards and 15 touchdowns last season for the Shock. He will most certainly be a big part of helping the Storm get back on track after their bye week, as they are sitting at 0-3 on the season.

The Storm also placed kick returner/wide receiver Gerald Young on injured reserve. He started all three games for the team this season, catching nine pass for 109 yard and a touchdown. he also returned 11 kickoffs for 212 yards.

The Storm also reassigned center Jeremy Schonbrunner, who started all 17 games for the Storm last season.

Sharks Make Trade with Steel, Bolster Talented Receiving Corp

On Monday, the Jacksonville Sharks announced that they've completed a trade with the Portland Steel. In the trade, Jacksonville acquires WR Jamar Howard, while the Steel receive OL Duke Robinson.

A Cincinnati, Ohio native, Howard (age 28, 6'2", 225 lbs) is in his fourth season in the Arena Football League, spending the last two with the Portland Thunder, which the franchise was known as prior to this season. Howard was Kyle Rowley's #1 target, catching 51 passes for 711 yards and 14 touchdowns before a knee injury ended his season after just five games.

He joined the Thunder during the 2014 season after spending time with the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League. In just 11 games, Howard had 44 receptions for 664 yards and nine touchdowns. Prior to his time in the Pacific Northwest, the Cincinnati and Central Missouri star made his league debut with the Cleveland Gladiators, where he caught 39 passes for 422 yards and six scores.

Duke Robinson (age 29, 6'5", 345 lbs) is also a fourth-year vet, but did not appear in any of the Sharks' games this season.

This adds yet another weapon in Tommy Grady's arsenal, which has been hard to stop in the first quarter of the season, while Portland gets some much-needed help on their offensive line.

Arena Football Power Rankings: Week 4

6. Cleveland Gladiators

The Cleveland Gladiators are having a very tough season. It didn't get much easier for them after last night's loss in Philadelphia. The team started strong, but did not finish strong. They sit with one win on the season, and that win came against the still winless Tampa Bay Storm, who even had a chance to steal a win in Cleveland.

5. Jacksonville Sharks

The Sharks have been shaky all season long. One moment, they're committing multiple turnovers in the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles KISS and the next moment they're knocking off the Philadelphia Soul on the road. The Sharks misfortune got to them again last night in an overtime loss to the Arizona Rattlers. They need to work on being consistent if they want to find themselves back on top of the American Conference.

4. Los Angeles KISS

The KISS have shown us once again that they can hang with the big boys when they took the Orlando Predators to the brink last night in a 43-40 loss. The KISS have shocked the AFL and their fans alike this season as they currently sit at a 2-2 record. No one expected them to be at ,500 at any point in the season after their first two seasons were seasons of mediocrity.

3. Philadelphia Soul

The Soul had one bad game against the Sharks. Other than that, they have continued to show why they have been the most successful sports franchise in Philadelphia since 2008. They have won two in a row and sit at a 3-1 record this season with a game against the KISS on the way. That game will be big for both teams to prove themselves a powerhouse in the AFL.

2. Orlando Predators

The Predators have been taken down to the wire the last two home games against the Portland Steel, who were off this week, and the Los Angeles KISS last night. Despite being pushed to the edge, the Predators have still found ways to win and that is why they are one of two undefeated teams in the AFL through the first four weeks.

1. Arizona Rattlers

The Rattlers stepped up big when they needed to in last night's win in Jacksonville. Other than that game, the Rattlers have dominated opponents this season, sitting at 4-0 on the season with the Steel coming to town. Record-wise, it looks as if the Rattlers will be well on their way to 5-0. If the Predators also find themselves at 5-0 come next week, we will have a battle of the undefeated in Orlando on May 7.

Offense Must Improve For Portland to Earn First Victory

The 0-3 start for the Portland Steel would be more palatable if all three of their losses looked like their second game of the season, a 53-50 battle against the Orlando Predators. However, they much more closely resemble their 80-28 demolishing at the hands of the Arizona Rattlers for the season opener, and their 70-32 drubbing last week against the Philadelphia Soul.

So what needs to be done to put Portland on the path towards success and a first 2016 victory? The Arena League, even more so than the NFL, relies on the talent of its starting quarterbacks. Danny Southwick has not been what the Steel had been hoping for so far. Amongst the six qualified starters in the league, Southwick ranks last in completion percentage and touchdowns, and second-to-last in yards per game. It does not help that Portland has allowed more sacks (10) than the rest of the league. Whether that’s a result of an offensive line that needs work, or a quarterback that’s indecisive with the ball, something needs to change if they expect their offense to improve.

George Washington once said, “Offensive operations…is the surest, if not the only, means of defense.” In other words, the best defense isa good offense. With an offense that refuses to move the ball or put points on the board, Portland has accumulated a weird stat line: They give up the most points in the league (67.7), while allowing the fewest yards (227.3), and having the most time of possession (35:17). Here’s how you read into that: When Portland goes on scoring drives, they take a while. When they give up the ball, it’s close to their own end zone.

Their opponents don’t have to travel far (fewer yards), so it takes a shorter amount of time (time of possession). And Portland tends to give up the ball frequently. In three games, the Steel have lost 3 fumbles (2 of them returned for touchdowns) and have thrown 5 interceptions. That’s an automatic shift in field possession right there. Adding to that, the Steel have managed to force just two turnovers of their own, creating an average turnover margin of -2 per game. Giving up the ball frequently and refusing to ever take it back is a tough hill to climb.

The name of the game is offense. How efficiently can you put the ball in the end zone every game? Portland has a long road ahead of them if they expect to earn their first win soon, let alone make a broader impact in the league.

Sharks Hang Tough, Can't Beat Rattlers

Looking on paper, the Jacksonville Sharks (1-3) weren't supposed to compete with the Arizona Rattlers (4-0) on Saturday night. Arizona's been winning by at least 30 points a night, and Jacksonville couldn't even beat Los Angeles. However, the two teams gave a crowd of more than 8,300 a track meet and a game to remember, with Arizona winning in overtime, 75-68.

After 136 points in 60 minutes, neither team could resolve anything. Thus, for the first time since Week 19 of the 2011 season, and the first time ever at home, there was bonus football for the crowd to enjoy. It didn't take long for Arizona to get the advantage, as a Greg Reid holding penalty set up two quick passes, finishing the drive with a Nick Davila pass to Maurice Purify in the end zone. David Hyland gave the Sharks good field position on the kick return, but the defense that eluded Arizona for most of the night clamped down in style, forcing a 3rd-and-8 where Tiger Jones bobbled the potential game-tying catch in the end zone, and as in classic fashion for offensive games, Arkeith Brown made the defensive play by intercepting Tommy Grady to end the game and to keep his team unbeaten.

The pick capped off a tremendous, tightly contested night where neither team led by more than two scores. While there were some great near plays on defense early (Hyland nearly intercepting Davila, then former Rattler Antron Dillon batting down a pass), both teams found the end zone early and often. After the first four possessions, Jacksonville had a slim 14-13 lead thanks to a missed Marcus Smith extra point.

The track meet continued, as there were seven players that did all the scoring. Both fullbacks (Derrick Ross and Mykel Benson) found the end zone, but the Sharks' trio of Spiderman (Roger Jackson), Superman (Joe Hills), and Tiger Jones countered everything that Mo Purify and Rod Windsor threw at the defense. Halfway through the second quarter, the teams were tied at 20 after Tyree Glasper partially blocked Marco Capozzoli's extra point.

Like against Orlando, Jacksonville had an opportunity to achieve a double score when it looked like they would have the ball last before halftime. However, after letting Spiderman weave through defenders to complete a 16-yard catch and run on 3rd-and-9. Arizona clamped to get the first stop of the night for either team. Defending the end zone to force 4th-and-11, and when Spiderman couldn't haul in a catch, the Rattlers had the advantage.

Purify broke through the defense to give Arizona a 34-20 lead with 18 seconds left, just enough time for Tommy Grady to find Superman in the end zone as time expired. When Spiderman sprinted 35 yards to the end zone to start the third quarter, the game was tied yet again. Before both offenses could be fully off and running, however, LaRoche "Action" Jackson did something that hadn't been done in quite a while. Cutting off a receiver at the goal line, Action dove for a Nick Davila pass and caught it as he went to the ground, the first interception in 224 Davila passes (including the playoffs). After Spiderman converted a 3rd-and-11, the Crockpot caught fire, as Derrick Ross took the ball and ran 33 yards to give the Sharks a 41-34 lead halfway through the third quarter.

That would be the last stop for either team in regulation, as Davila and Tommy Grady continued their duel. Just when either team was out of it, receivers did just enough to bail them out. One example was on a key drive just inside the one-minute warning. With the game tied at 62, Jacksonville found themselves at 2nd-and-8 at the Rattlers' 9-yard line. Instead of forcing the defense to use more timeouts, the Sharks again opted to pass. 2nd-and-8 quickly became 4th-and-8, and Superman rose to the occasion yet again, catching a pass in the end zone for a 68-62 lead after Marco Capozzoli's 3rd missed extra point of the season, all in the last two weeks.

The final few minutes were also punctuated by onside kicks, as both teams were looking to steal possessions to seal the game, or at least let the other team score quickly to get the ball back. The strategy nearly paid off to perfection as Mykel Benson scored his third touchdown of the game, but Marcus Smith matched the missed extra point, leaving a tie game at 68.

With 23 seconds left, the Rattlers decided to kick it deep. David Hyland, who had a good game on special teams all night, made a crucial mistake when he fumbled the kickoff along the boards, and Marquis Floyd snagged the ball to give Arizona a chance at a chip shot field goal and a win. Jacksonville did challenge the call, but lost, costing them a timeout.

When all seemed lost, it was lights, camera, Action, as LaRoche Jackson picked Davila again with six seconds left to give Jacksonville time for a miracle play. The miracle nearly sounded the death knell, as Superman fumbled the hook and ladder, and Kerry Reed was tackled at the six-yard line to set up overtime.

Both quarterbacks had stellar nights, as Tommy Grady completed 25 of 40 passes for 340 yards, eight touchdowns, and one interception, while Nick Davila lived up to his nickname of the Latin Laser completing 35 of 50 passes for 390 yards, eight scores of his own, and the two Jackson interceptions.

The ground game was more prevalent, as well. Mykel Benson finished with seven carries for 29 yards and three scores for Arizona, while the legend of Derrick Ross continued, as he ran seven times for 45 yards and his long score.

The game nearly ended with five 100-yard receivers, as Rod Windsor (15-165-3, game highs in catches and yards), Maurice Purify (9-151-5), Tiger Jones (11-144-2), and Joe Hills (11-102-5) all broke the barrier, while Roger Jackson (6-94-1) came up just short.

There wasn't much flair on defense, aside from the three interceptions and fumbles. Allen Chapman, Arkeith Brown, and KJ Morton all registered 2+ pass breakups for the Rattlers, while Alvin Ray Jackson, Greg Reid, David Hyland, and Antron Dillon all notched at least one (Jackson's and Hyland's came on pick attempts). Reid led the game with nine total tackles, while he, Hyland, and LaRoche Jackson were the only defenders with at least six.

The Sharks now start a long road trip, as they head south to take on the Tampa Bay Storm in the first of two Sunday meetings this season. It's a May Day matchup, with kickoff set for 2:00 p.m.
