On Friday, the Portland Steel announced the activation of quarterback Shane Austin from their other-league-exempt list. After being assigned to the Portland franchise last November, Austin left this March to try his hand in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The Portland Steel have spent the majority of the 2016 AFL
season with huge question marks at quarterback. Danny Southwick began the
season with high hopes, but struggled mightily. Southwick was quickly replaced
by Darron Thomas, who is now in his second stint with the team. In his first
game as starter, Thomas managed just three touchdown passes and five interceptions.
Austin spent the last two seasons with the Cleveland
Gladiators as one of the more prolific producers in the league. In 2014, he was
14-1 as a starter, putting up 4,478 yards and 99 touchdowns. In 2015, despite a
less-successful 8-10 record, Austin still accumulated 4,651 yards and 101
touchdowns. Those numbers dwarf anything the Portland franchise has mustered over
the last two seasons.
“I am looking forward that the addition of Shane (Austin)
will bolster the quarterback position” said Steel head coach and general
manager Ron James. “We find ourselves in a better position today with this
roster move. Shane brings a lot of success and knowledge of the arena football
and I look forward to see what he can add to this roster.”
The Steel will look to have Austin take the field against
his former team on Monday in Cleveland. Kickoff at Quicken Loans Arena is set
for 5 p.m. PT.
