Marco Capozzoli Will Not Return to Sharks This Season

In a move first reported by Beyond the Walls on Monday night, the Jacksonville Sharks have announced that kicker Marco Capozzoli will not return to the team this season, having effectively been cut.

Capozzoli, whose franchise-record 51-yard field goal in the 2012 conference semifinals propelled the Sharks to a come from behind win, remains the most accurate kicker in Jacksonville history. However, this season has been subpar, especially by his standards.

In a year where kickers in general have struggled, Capozzoli is only 1-for-3 on field goals this season, and has missed 10 extra points, putting him at 76% on the campaign. Against Cleveland, he missed two extra points and a potential game-winner from 30 yards out, allowing the Gladiators to leave with a 41-40 upset victory.

With a negative history of missing crucial extra points, and with some uncharacteristic extra point blocks, Jacksonville felt the need for immediate change, prompting the move.

For now, Capozzoli will remain on the Sharks roster until a replacement is found, Jacksonville returns home on Saturday to face the Portland Steel before traveling to Orlando on Friday, May 27.
